Norman Smith NEAC (1910-1996)

Norman Smith was born in 1910 in Walsall and, amongst other art schools, attended the Manchester School of Art.

At the start of his career Smith was known for his watercolour landscapes, however in the mid 1960’s, inspired by the work of the Italian artist Giorgio Morandi, he started to focus on still life pictures in oils.

Smith’s still lifes have the same muted style of Morandi, which combine with low saturation and contrast, giving the works a real sense of tranquility and elegance.

Smith was elected to the New English Art Club (NEAC) in 1970, he exhibited widely including at the Mall Galleries, the Royal Academy, the Royal West of England Academy and the Paris Salon. He died in 1996.
