Kenneth Denton (1932-2024)

Kenneth Denton was a skilful oil painter of traditional landscape and marine subjects. He received a scholarship to the Rochester School of Art in 1944 and went on to pursue a career as a decorative artist. Throughout this time he continued to study fine art through night classes. Following National Service he established himself as a decorative artist and gained fellowships to the British Institute of Interior Designers and The Chartered Society of Designers. He also took up several teaching positions, including at the Maidstone College of Art and Royal School of Military Engineering.

Denton worked predominantly in oils with brushes and palette knife. He worked from both life and photographs in a direct and confident manner. His work attempted to accurately capture the naturalistic effects of light in landscapes at all times of year and throughout the day. Beyond their technical proficiency, many of Denton’s works impart a sense of calming nostalgia and atmospheric natural beauty.

Denton was elected a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) in 1975. He was also a member of the International Society of Marine Painters, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and President of the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists. He won the Hunting Group Art Award in 1983 and held many solo shows in Britain and abroad. His work is held by the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and has proved popular amongst both private and corporate collectors.
