Richard Pikesley NEAC (b. 1951)
Richard Pikesley (born 1951) is a distinguished British landscape painter renowned for his expressive oil and watercolour works that capture the transient effects of light and atmosphere. His art is deeply rooted in tradition, drawing inspiration from the plein air practices of 19th-century masters like John Constable, yet infused with a contemporary immediacy. As such, his work represents an important link of continuity in the history of British figurative landscape painting.
Born in London, Pikesley began his artistic journey at Harrow School of Art, where he was influenced by notable tutors such as Ken Howard (1932-2022). He furthered his studies at the City of Canterbury College of Art and the University of London, where he honed his skills in fine art. Upon completing his education, Pikesley initially pursued a career in teaching, which provided him with the financial stability to focus on his painting. During this period, he also worked at the Winsor & Newton factory, gaining valuable insights into the materials of his craft.
Pikesley's approach to painting is characterized by an immediate and instinctive response to his surroundings. He often begins with quick sketches or studies to capture fleeting moments of light and atmosphere, particularly during early mornings or late evenings. These initial works serve as the foundation for more detailed pieces created in the studio or on location, reflecting his commitment to observing and interpreting the natural world directly. His style flows in the space between the wholly impressionistic and realistic and is often preoccupied with producing an intense sense of atmosphere.
Pikesley’s talent has been recognised by his peers from an early age. He was elected to the New English Art Club (NEAC) in 1974, at the age of twenty-three, making him one of its youngest members. He served as President of the NEAC from 2013 to 2018, contributing significantly to the club's activities and exhibitions. He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) in 1997, and became a full Member in 2001. His works have been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions and various galleries in the UK and abroad. His paintings are held in several prestigious collections, such as St. John's College, Cambridge, Longleat House, and the Crown Estate. He has also contributed to the history of British art through his writings, including a commissioned book on landscape painting published in 1991.
